The Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET) announces two funding opportunities for Clemson faculty:
The first is a Graduate Fellows Program in which COMSET expects to provide up to $50,000 this year in stipend supplements to attract and retain nation-best graduate students to come to Clemson and work in areas of optics and optical materials. Contact Dennis Smith, COMSET Associate Director, at dwsmith@clemson.edu for more details. > download the Graduate Fellows Program PDF here
The second is an Infrastructural Investment Program. For the present fiscal year, COMSET has budgeted approximately $300,000 to purchase equipment that advances Clemson's research and educational competitiveness in areas related to optics and optical materials. Contact Steve Foulger, COMSET Associate Director, at foulger@clemson.edu for more details. > download the COMSET Research Infrastructure Investment PDF here
COMSET is an interdisciplinary research unit of the College of Engineering and Science at Clemson University. COMSET provides an organized framework with significant centralized infrastructure for faculty having common interests to collaborate in developing advanced materials that exhibit a value-added interaction with light.

At The Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET), our goal is to be the recognized global leader for innovation and education in the science and technology of optical materials. We pursue this mission by conducting research; teaching at the 2-year, 4-year, and advanced college degree levels; performing contract services within the scientific and business communities; and transferring and expanding our technologies to new venture firms, other educational institutions, and the regional, national, and international community.
Cutting-edge research is at the heart of COMSET's success. We actively pursue sponsored research in the areas of organic and inorganic optical materials.
Our research focuses on optical polymers, glasses, and crystals, with a range of programs as diverse and exciting as the expertise of our world-class faculty. COMSET personnel currently hold 10 patents, 7 of which are commercially licensed, and have applied for 20 more. For a detailed description of our current research projects, click here.

COMSET practices a multi-disciplinary approach to the research and application of optical fibers and photonics technologies, and our faculty includes some of the finest minds in fields as diverse as organic, inorganic, textile, and analytical chemistry; materials science; and mechanical, electrical, and ceramics engineering. In addition to impressive academic credentials, many of our faculty members also have worked for industry in the public or private sectors, and all are committed to our partnership and mentorship approach.
Within COMSET, numerous laboratories and groups provide opportunities for simultaneous work on a number of breakthrough research projects. COMSET faculty collaborate freely, and the innovative spark this atmosphere ignites is reflected in the large number of publications, sponsored projects, and service initiatives in which they have participated, as well as the honors and awards they have received.
COMSET is a centerpiece program at Clemson University, with veritably unprecedented access to resources, equipment, and opportunities in the field of optical fiber and related photonic technologies. Our faculty is the foundation of this program's success, producing breakthrough research while also maintaining a high standard of teaching and service.
