Clemson University just announced that a prestigious honor has been given to a COMSET member. The Russian Academy of Sciences has elected Roger Stolen, a distinguished visiting professor in materials science and engineering at Clemson University, as a foreign member.
Roger Stolen is a pioneer in the field of optics, the science and technology of generating and harnessing light, and is a Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET) faculty member. He studies new materials that interact with light in ways that have critical commercial application in the fields of telecommunications, defense, sensing and displays.
“This is a very significant honor,” said Chris Przirembel, vice president for research and economic development at Clemson. “This membership gives Roger Stolen, and therefore the Clemson optics community, the opportunity to collaborate with some of the most brilliant minds in the world in the field of optics.”
The Russian Academy of Sciences was established in 1724 and is recognized not only as the supreme scientific institution in Russia but as one of the most successful science academies in the world.
The Carolinas MicroOptic Triangle (CMOT), a research alliance in optical technologies between Clemson, UNC-Charlotte, and Western Carolina University has been on the road exhibiting at the major optics conferences to strengthen national and international visibility. Specific efforts have included the creation of marketing materials, a regional conference at Clemson in September 2005, the first CMOT Symposium at Charlotte in November 2005, a national rollout at SPIE Photonics West in January 2006, and an optical clustering event in cooperation with NC Photonics in February 2006. Future events include participation in Innoventure 2006 (Greenville, SC) in March 2006, Defense and Security Show (Orlando, FL) in April 2006, and the second CMOT Symposium at WCU in April 2006. An example of our enhanced national visibility can be seen in a recent article in
the Advanced Imaging Pro's Industry News Section.

CLEMSON -- What's the value of a good chair? Millions, if it's endowed.
A $10 million endowed faculty position in optical materials will bring the brightest faculty in that field to Clemson University . . . and create jobs.
The $10 million endowed chair, created by $5 million from the state matched by $5 million from other sources, will support a world-renowned scholar, two junior faculty positions and funds for research to complement existing researchers at the Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET) in Pendleton.
"You bring someone in who is the best in the world, who attracts the best graduate students, and companies are going to locate here just to be near that person," said John Ballato, COMSET director. "Further, some of those top graduates are going to be entrepreneurial and start up their own companies in the region, creating additional high-paying jobs."
